This is the ferry that comes by us twice a day ... more in the summer months. :-) <br />

<br />
Well, we have been on the dock at our 'new' digs on Salt Spring Island for eight months already, and life is good! We love it here, and hope to make it 'home' indefinitely. The folks who own the place have been here twice - a week in October, and a week in March. They'll be here again for two weeks in July, and then two weeks at the end of August, maybe. So we have a few daily and weekly things we do in the house and around the property, and otherwise our time is our own. When they're coming, we get the house ready for them (making up beds, turning up the heat, having firewood ready, etc.) and after they leave, we clean up and then shut it all down again. Pretty easy!<br />
<br />
So of course I'm knitting .... lots of shawls mostly. Some of my recent projects include ....<br />

Oh, and I did a little 'decorating' in Ganges in January, too, with a 'partner in crime' who prefers to remain nameless... :-) Actually, we planted a flower 'garden', just for fun. <br />

<br />
If you're coming to Salt Spring this summer, let us know - I've made more than one lifelong friend among my blog readers .... I love meeting you! <br />
<br />
<br />

<br /><br />"Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-34087421408237588262015-12-31T18:39:00.002-08:002015-12-31T18:39:59.911-08:00HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!My blog stats tell me I last posted here in MARCH. Really, March? How does that happen?<br />
<br />
I'm sorry, dear loyal readers, I had no intention of abandoning this little corner of my world for that long. Life (and FACEBOOK) have both gotten in the way a lot!<br />
<br />
The short story: Michael and I are both still well (for 60-somethings), still sober, still together and happy. Still on the Wind Walker, still on Salt Spring Island, and I'm still knitting and writing.<br />
<br />
We do have a new 'home' though. After 4 years in Fulford, we'd had enough of the not-very-nice-man who owned the property there (in spite of his wonderful wife and daughter... we could've lived there forever if it was just them) - we never said anything publicly because we liked living in Fulford, but being in his world wasn't much fun.<br />
<br />
So in June we untied the lines on the boat and left for good. We spent the summer on a mooring buoy in Ganges, and on September 1st moved to a new dock -- where we are the welcomed caretakers of a home and property for some great folks who live full-time in Hollywood, and only 6 weeks of the year here.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

One of the new views out our windows....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We're several miles closer to 'town' (Ganges), on a much nicer road, and these folks have treated us SO well since we got here. We hope to stay for a very loooooonng time. :-)<br />
<br />
The favorite thing I've knit this year? Well, this was the first of five Dreambirds I made - I was a little obsessed with them for a bit! <br /> <br />

The last one pictured here won me 2nd prize at the Fall Fair ... that was a first for me! I might still knit more.... they're pretty fun.<br />
<br />
Life is good .... and I hope you all have an AMAZING 2016. I think I will!"Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-4482410339570025052015-03-02T19:05:00.001-08:002015-03-02T19:05:24.200-08:00KNITTING It feels like spring here on Salt Spring right now .... we've had blue skies almost every day, and warm temperatures. Gardeners are gardening, folks are bicycling, and the pink-blossomed trees are everywhere. I love it! Not that we've had a bad winter, because we definitely haven't. As live-aboards, our biggest fear going into winter is always the southeaster windstorms, and there are usually several through the winter months. One of them completely knocked out the marina next to ours a few years ago, and they've never bothered re-building it. There's been only ONE this year, and it wasn't even that bad.<br />
<br />
I forgot to mention in yesterday's post that you can check out this paper I'm working with now... it's called the <a href="http://islandsmarketplace.com/" target="_blank">Islands Marketplace</a>, and if you click on 'current issue' every other Friday, you can read it - you'll find my boating adventures, community photos, and other stories I've written, and get a real sense of life on Salt Spring if it interests you.<br />
<br />
Today was our weekly knitting circle here, in Ganges and most of the usual suspects showed up. :) I have cast on for a top-down sweater for myself that looks like it's going to be a fast knit because it's easy, so that's a change (from the ongoing lace shawls...)<br />
<br />
I finished a baby blanket test knit last week, too...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcIpHHeL-cTXPXse5deWyPTquFr4kphx4mLzleOUJdN3tbV_Pe7tfcEC_HTEswx8XJPuGuLISa3WgIadONwNOULF0Mnfuo4s0Jm71Ka-b2PDNPnaq5CDCbag_uz53xYXbxf6YG2e7Vji4/s1600/TCK-blanket-test.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcIpHHeL-cTXPXse5deWyPTquFr4kphx4mLzleOUJdN3tbV_Pe7tfcEC_HTEswx8XJPuGuLISa3WgIadONwNOULF0Mnfuo4s0Jm71Ka-b2PDNPnaq5CDCbag_uz53xYXbxf6YG2e7Vji4/s1600/TCK-blanket-test.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
That was fun! I also have a commission on the needles ... it's the <a href="http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring09/KSPATTaeolian.php" target="_blank">Aeolian</a> shawl, a very popular free pattern from Knitty. The one I'm doing is black, so it's hard to see (especially during my favorite knitting time, o-dark-thirty in the a.m.), and it has NUPPS ... so it has been a slowwwwwwwwww project. <br />
<br />
It's Monday night ... so that means The Voice is on shortly! I don't watch much TV, but that show and American Idol both have me suckered .... um, I mean, interested. :-) <br />
<br />"Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-14410404514376774972015-03-01T10:46:00.001-08:002015-03-01T10:46:26.961-08:00Here I go again.... I'm so sorry you faithful visitors have had to keep looking at that Christmas countdown thingie all this time. Thanks for hanging in there with me!<br />
<br />
Well, 'the more things change, the more they stay the same....' is my
theme now. Not long after I posted about working for Welcome Wagon.... I
left that job. I've said it before and I'll say it again .... I'm too
entrepreneurial to fit into a corporate 'slot' that dictates my daily
routine. I thought that the job would give me a lot of freedom, and it
did, initially ... but then things changed. So ... in spite of the fact
that I tripled the income to Vancouver Island Welcome Wagon in a mere
eight months, and had a blast doing it, I was being pressured to do
things in a way that didn't sit well with me - and I'm too old to 'do
what I'm told', or else.<br />
<br />
So ... still living aboard,
still hanging out with the love of my life (who turned 65 a few days
ago), still on Salt Spring Island, and still knitting. Life is good!
Since we moved here (can you believe it's been nearly 4 years??) I have
done some writing for a little local print-edition news-advertiser that
comes out every two weeks, so I contacted the woman who owns it just
before Christmas. We are currently working out some sort of
partnership; not even sure what that looks like yet, but I'm writing,
doing some ad sales, doing promo and editing and ... well, 'one day at a
time.' <br />
<br />
It's definitely spring on Salt Spring Island already...<br />

I've been spending a lot of time in Victoria lately and the Japanese plum trees are in full bloom already, too. The reason I've been spending time in Victoria is because, on Dec. 30th, while hiking, my son Jason took what he thought was a small jump off a ledge that turned out to be a too-big jump off the ledge ... and broke his right leg/ankle in four places! After emergency surgery on New Year's Day (which made him a 'bionic man' with steel plates and pins and screws and such), he has been pretty much immobilized for the last two months, and has needed the kind of help a mama can provide .... cooking, cleaning, laundry and other assorted errands! It's been fun to help out and to spend time with him. He's a little more mobile now, so he won't need me around quite as much. <br />

I have, foolishly, signed up (again) to NaBloMoPo's March daily writing challenge, so we'll see what happens. The theme is 'News' and I always seem to have some of that, don't I? ;-) <br />

<br />
Oh, well, I've intended to post all day today, and almost went to bed without doing it <b>again. </b><br />
<br />
Michael and I had a great day today, celebrating a couple of pretty
important milestones. First of all, it's 36 years ago today that Michael
committed to not taking another drink one-day-at-a-time, and he's been
sober since that day -- Nov. 9th, 1978.<br />
<br />
And then, on his 14th sober
birthday, I made a decision to quit smoking (I had been smoking almost 2
packs a day for 25+ years at that point) - so today marks 22 years of
being a non-smoker, for me. We took each others' pictures to mark the
occasion (in our 'backyard'), and then went out for a cheeseburger.<br />

<br />

<br />
I've been knitting this weekend ... I'm working on a commission for a pair of overalls for a one-year-old boy. I couldn't find a pattern I liked, so I'm combining two different ones with a pinterest photo I liked (talk about eclectic!) and using up some sock yarn and ... so far, so good. Pics tomorrow .... I hope. :)"Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-57888592746432609602014-11-03T19:45:00.000-08:002014-11-03T19:45:00.632-08:00Then... and now... I love Salt Spring Island, I really do. But every now and then I look at downtown Victoria's web-cam -- and then I really miss living there. This is what it looked like this evening...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC_uDH16vV7sD8Xt9a_e91XGaCSdv5dpPeudABForivLu3Vfcx3V9W1FmbUhhXYelC1dLtE3RPDCIngEDvYr2q_MkdRpUORBUASqa3n2A3JGSQKWEmz092pOyhfNdk_OSiUlf4tiyiQus/s1600/Victoria+harbour.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC_uDH16vV7sD8Xt9a_e91XGaCSdv5dpPeudABForivLu3Vfcx3V9W1FmbUhhXYelC1dLtE3RPDCIngEDvYr2q_MkdRpUORBUASqa3n2A3JGSQKWEmz092pOyhfNdk_OSiUlf4tiyiQus/s1600/Victoria+harbour.JPG" height="184" width="320" /></a></div>
The dark spot on the right side of the photo is actually the lawn of the world-famous Empress Hotel, and just off the left side of the photo is the legislative buildings - The parliament buildings are all lit up for Christmas by about Dec. 1st, and there's a 100' high evergreen on the lawn that gets lit up, as well - and, in case you can't imagine what it would be like to be a boat on that dock at Christmas time, I'll tell you: it's like living in a Christmas card. Just seeing this scene tonight made me all nostalgic and I start thinking of Christmas! <br />
<br />
However, Christmas *is* still almost two months away ... and we'll be in Victoria to celebrate it with the kids and grandkids (just not on that dock!), but meanwhile, here at home .... I finished a Christmas-*looking* project today.<br />

It's a hoodie, without the hoodie, if you know what I mean! It's a commission for someone who lives in a very warm place, so I have no idea what she'll do with it .... but I do know that it was fun to knit! <br />
<br />
Off-Island to work for the next three days, so no promises about posting! <br />
<br />
<br />"Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-4811093163881542972014-11-02T19:40:00.001-08:002014-11-02T19:40:15.788-08:00Two in a row! It`s been a drizzly Sunday here ... but my days off are so precious now! It`s been an interesting transition to a full-time position, that`s for sure.<br />
<br />
I have often joked that, in my adult life, I`ve only had three real jobs - and they all ended badly. I`ve never been good at having `bosses`(doing what I`m told to do hasn`t been a strong point!); I`m such an entrepreneur - and I`ve been so lucky to have had opportunities, either through owning our own small businesses or because of my freelance writing career, to have worked my own hours, from home, as I chose. <br />
<br />
That`s somewhat true in this position, as well - I do work from home one or two days a week, generally, and I am left to figure out my own priorities and work schedule. But ... the work has to get done, and it really is more than full-time, so it`s easy to get sucked in to `I`ll just do this one more thing`that stretches into the evening or the weekend. So I`ve learned to stop myself, at LEAST for one full day on the weekend ... put my feet up, drink an extra coffee, start a little fire, and knit, of course!<br />
<br />
Hey, here`s one of the tasks that occupied me this summer -- I wanted to decorate the route for the gay pride parade, so I started working on these cuffs several months ago...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8XJ2IdRjo2uTPJC7UIlK83D2ucxG3pJ3N0YnWn_wz2SMdlVjv17or94-9Nz7flfpmoSeVFA6mCOYuXDmi31tJuKY0utNyTg0hilFMYGrJG9KD-fm2L31R1N-zg6EyPf36mM935IHRD-8/s1600/yarn-bomb-gp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8XJ2IdRjo2uTPJC7UIlK83D2ucxG3pJ3N0YnWn_wz2SMdlVjv17or94-9Nz7flfpmoSeVFA6mCOYuXDmi31tJuKY0utNyTg0hilFMYGrJG9KD-fm2L31R1N-zg6EyPf36mM935IHRD-8/s1600/yarn-bomb-gp.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
There are six, total, 8-ft long cuffs that Michael and I installed at 5:30 a.m. on the day of the parade - it was fun to be part of the day (though anonymously at the time)! I have a whole new idea for next year, too... :)<br />
<br />
A bit of other knitting ...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxJ9ncKxX-9aAFYfFHkmlzdEAON4qDdLdQOiPolKeD35wLnBorcDRLw1WTvMa-JSrH8IEyQeGFt6oxHMSzhYnBlrA7O_Uxeo2w6LwJyO4HgU7LAkMoKMv7KzteTRtkru48_QaFtCPJhBU/s1600/Quilla-w-gloves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxJ9ncKxX-9aAFYfFHkmlzdEAON4qDdLdQOiPolKeD35wLnBorcDRLw1WTvMa-JSrH8IEyQeGFt6oxHMSzhYnBlrA7O_Uxeo2w6LwJyO4HgU7LAkMoKMv7KzteTRtkru48_QaFtCPJhBU/s1600/Quilla-w-gloves.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
This was a commissioned shawl for a December wedding with the fingerless gloved to match. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGLi0OC2eQHxqsGL_WCK_Mqk3SSNx3J42RkWkbdSE0BgiccW6-IIJ5KKBtVCDQszNgUAf8zCPxpl6VBldTbqFtGn1KOX_k_B2Xicet035MWZkJN2eBOHvH-Kr6omOdRZgmBYy9nU-axv4/s1600/Arana+Cowl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGLi0OC2eQHxqsGL_WCK_Mqk3SSNx3J42RkWkbdSE0BgiccW6-IIJ5KKBtVCDQszNgUAf8zCPxpl6VBldTbqFtGn1KOX_k_B2Xicet035MWZkJN2eBOHvH-Kr6omOdRZgmBYy9nU-axv4/s1600/Arana+Cowl.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
And I`ve test-knit several cowls in the last few months, too - this was one of my favorites, in some hand-spun I had in my stash.<br />
<br />
A couple more commissions coming up (baby overalls, times three!) ... and then I can start on my Christmas knitting. <br />
<br />
Thanks to all of you who have already commented, or emailed me -- I had no idea I was missed. :)"Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-61634292764894575462014-11-01T16:22:00.002-07:002014-11-01T16:24:30.953-07:00NOVEMBER 1st ... or How Did THAT Happen??UNBELIEVABLE that almost a year has gone by since I posted last!<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyLafYMXzrncFq0m1jQBdrU5tJZxmL2JqG1Okr0WcZ22UetYd9Zg2KaKSsnMQC_yX5e8ZFL0g1Jk_W53eFPje3LgpNPJ7QMdfzpjG6xrEe8eLVR9C1O9glzs3KBfMgKtYM7tJBlHcl69c/s1600/fulfordlanding.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyLafYMXzrncFq0m1jQBdrU5tJZxmL2JqG1Okr0WcZ22UetYd9Zg2KaKSsnMQC_yX5e8ZFL0g1Jk_W53eFPje3LgpNPJ7QMdfzpjG6xrEe8eLVR9C1O9glzs3KBfMgKtYM7tJBlHcl69c/s1600/fulfordlanding.jpg" height="225" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The short story is: I'm fine, Michael's fine, we're well and fat and happy and still sober and still together and still living on the Wind Walker in beautiful Fulford Harbour on beautiful Salt Spring Island. Still loving being grandparents. I'm still knitting. And still working for Welcome Wagon. <br />
<br />
Aaaah, but 'there's the rub,' as they say. The one thing that did change drastically on January 1st of this year was my job with Welcome Wagon. I went from happily being the Salt Spring Island 'Rep' for Welcome Wagon .... to becoming Area Manager for all of Vancouver Island-Powell River-Gulf Islands! It's a huge territory, and needless to say, my life has been a whirlwind ever since.<br />
<br />
The long story is: my boss approached me in December to see if I was interested in taking over her position when she retired in March. I thought about it for about 60 seconds, and said yes. :) I started training on January 1st by shadowing her (and she lives a ferry ride and then two-hour drive away) from then until March 15th, when I officially took over the job. I put on a LOT of miles in that time! But I also continued to be the Salt Spring presence AND had to train someone to take over that job, too... so it was a pretty crazy couple of months.<br />
<br />
And it's kind of been crazy ever since... I'm on the road a lot, and spend a lot of time on ferries and in hotels (hence .... knitting has not suffered). I supervise (and hire and train) up to 30 reps at any given time (so I attend monthly staff meetings all over Vancouver Island, for example) and do sales and ongoing support, etc., as well as 'open' communities that haven't got a WW program yet. But .... it's a salaried position, with an expense account and a commission structure as well -- and no more jeans and t-shirts, I actually have to dress up! -- and I'm loving it!<br />
<br />
Some of you are now thinking ... 'What does Michael think of this?' Well, if you know my hubby, you know that he's a 'homebody,' and much more introverted than me. He loves nothing better than to putter around here ... on the boat, doing housework, on the docks, etc. And he loves that I'm still up for some adventure, and that I love coming home and telling him all about whatever I've been up to - he just doesn't want to be the one living it. So it's worked out well for both of us! Besides ... the Wind Walker's engines are below our living room floor, so he can never work on anything when I'm around, anyway ... :)<br />
<br />
I lug my laptop with me a lot, too, so theoretically I could still be blogging. The thing is that there is a time difference of 3 hours between where I live here on the west coast, and head office, in Toronto. The office there opens at 7:30 a.m., which is 4:30 a.m. here, and if you've been following my life for awhile, you'd know that I'm often up at that hour - but now, in the time frame during which I used to blog, I'm now downloading emails, doing research, on the phone to head office, and starting my day, dealing with the daily stuff of whatever's happening throughout my region. The cool thing about that is that I'm often done for the day by 2 pm - but by then I'm too brain-dead to do anything but knit! <br />
<br />
So here it is, November .... the month of <a href="http://www.blogher.com/novembers-nablopomo-here-join-blogroll-enter-win-pass-blogher-pro" target="_blank">NaBloPoMo</a>, which I've participated in for the last 3 or 4 years. I'm not sure I'll officially sign up this year, because I'll be very surprised if I can keep up (blogging every day for the whole month) - but I might try, unofficially. So hopefully you'll hear from me a little more often - at least for November!<br />
<br />
And next post, I'll even show you some knitting..."Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-15404378379676552142014-01-01T20:02:00.002-08:002014-01-01T20:02:46.915-08:00HAPPY NEW YEAR!Sure enough, that whole Christmas thing got away on me, and I got away from blogging!<br />
<br />
All of December was wonderful, though ... first of all, we went up to Sri's mountaintop retreat in Parksville for the first time. It's hard to believe that it's been four years since Susan died, and Sri bought this property at the end of that first year -- he's been wanting us to see it since. It was beautiful .... and difficult.<br />
<br />
He had to pick us up at the foot of the mountain (a 20-minute drive from Parksville) and take us up in his 4 x 4. That's the Strait of Georgia in the background -- the view was amazing! <br />

I saved my energy and our decorations for the house ... we got to house- and dog-sit for the property owners this year, so I was able to host Christmas in a two-storey, 6-bedroom house! All the kids and grandkids were here for most of the holiday ... it was wonderful. And I was so 'in the moment,' apparently, that I never once took out my camera until they'd all gone! (I'm kicking myself for that now.... but I did get this shot of Ben, the dog, in the spirit of Christmas!)<br />

That's pretty rare here, and we're feeling it. My computer corner is on the starboard side of the boat, toward the bow .... which means that it faces the 'weather', wind and all; there's an air scoop on the hull right outside my window, too. The result of all this is that it's especially cold to sit at my computer for any length of time right now ... hence, no posts the last few days.<br />
<br />
Even this heron was 'hunkering down' to avoid the cold!<br />

I've been sitting here beside the fire knitting, oblivious to the world outside in the dark .... and Michael just got home from Ganges, informing me that it's snowing outside.<br />
<br />
Sure enough, I opened the blinds to see if it really was true ... and it's snowing outside.<br />
<br />
Guess I have to wait until morning to see if I have to start cancelling my plans. What a shame it would be if I had to stay home and knit tomorrow.... lol. After all, I've just started the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/groups/advent-calendar-scarf-2013" target="_blank">2013 Advent Scarf</a>, so I'll have some knitting to do! "Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-70867896112457672762013-12-01T20:30:00.002-08:002013-12-01T20:30:45.743-08:00Well, I was tempted to take a day off from blogging after succeeding in completing NaBloPoMo, but I decided I better not ... I've got a habit re-established here!<br />
<br />
I had a pretty lazy day today ... it rained off and on so I started a little fire in the woodstove, knitted a little, did a bit of housework (why, yes, I do housework .. but only when I really need a break from the important stuff I'm doing. Like knitting.) and finally blocked a shawl I finished over a month ago:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ4UD4HkKzpo7w-ZaAUe8fzXrwirdt53zixMNpEKAC3nkI96F75HsplEeSYqQBKYhsj7y0bfrKfXMpgKFAAETTciBS8zN-6WnG83TjzEAZQbPTBzrG73dBiy5kvhnZSZjUxZAvR7KnQ7k/s1600/olive+shawl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="183" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ4UD4HkKzpo7w-ZaAUe8fzXrwirdt53zixMNpEKAC3nkI96F75HsplEeSYqQBKYhsj7y0bfrKfXMpgKFAAETTciBS8zN-6WnG83TjzEAZQbPTBzrG73dBiy5kvhnZSZjUxZAvR7KnQ7k/s320/olive+shawl.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
It's <a href="http://www.siviaharding.com/patterns/harbour_lights_shawl/" target="_blank">Harbour Lights by Sivia Harding</a>, (one of my all-time favorite lace designers), but I used a narrower border ... probably about the 6th or 7th one I've knit since she debuted the pattern at the Victoria FibreFest several years ago. This one is a gift for someone I hope to see tomorrow, so I'm glad it's drying quickly! <br />
<br />
Next up ... I've *got* to get the red baby blanket blocked and ready to ship -- it's going up-Island to Parksville with us on Saturday morning so Julie can take it to Alberta when she goes for Christmas. My niece, Doneen, had her baby shower today... she's due on January 4th, and I think this is the first preggo picture any of us has seen of her!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I might have to have another lazy day tomorrow... there's an outside chance there will be snow on the ground when we wake up in the morning, apparently. "Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-83062114422910955022013-11-30T19:51:00.000-08:002013-11-30T19:51:01.169-08:00HIGH FIVES! Hey, I just blogged every single day for 30 days for the first time in MONTHS! Now... let's see if I can keep it up....<br />
<br />
Had a great day today -- finished teaching the 4-week intermediate class at Stitches Yarn Shop here on Salt Spring. Great class, great students -- it was a lot of fun!<br />
<br />
Michael met me after the class -- it was 'Light Up' day today in Ganges, and it had all happened before I finished my class, so we drove around and looked at the lights a bit. <a href="http://christmasonsaltspring.com/" target="_blank">Christmas on Salt Spring</a> is a pretty big deal around here! Santa comes by floatplane, for one thing... that happened at 1 pm today:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiypabZ5IMdMU8n-Sa45eZu1-AG0eAv4tcNW6qHlizauU3kG9y_nOAbZ0DIdncOUc97iBH-2bY_zue0_iuqFKG3NMICVJvAez2JB1qnc51boV1QAmO74PJiITgEbghAqUZvkfY7ABiGTig/s1600/Santa-SSI.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiypabZ5IMdMU8n-Sa45eZu1-AG0eAv4tcNW6qHlizauU3kG9y_nOAbZ0DIdncOUc97iBH-2bY_zue0_iuqFKG3NMICVJvAez2JB1qnc51boV1QAmO74PJiITgEbghAqUZvkfY7ABiGTig/s320/Santa-SSI.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There's a chili competition going on in Ganges right now (we were cold and tired so we came home), kids' entertainment, et. ... and lots of other Christmas happenings. Fun!<br />
<br />
Day off tomorrow ... I'm looking forward to doing some Christmas knitting, catching up on some paperwork, and not much else! :)<br />
<br />
Over and out for November.... :) "Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-14246223277927796422013-11-29T21:24:00.003-08:002013-11-29T21:24:56.353-08:00HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME I had a lovely birthday day today ...<br />
<br />
It started when I woke up to a gorgeous bouquet of flowers on the table.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl-LLkSJzLC9DGDA7R0VtmN-STKfBfnsr3kORtazWSpz0zbPAQHmrIVIUDJZfd672qB7umQdPlVZRKKeQQ-it-cblvvSCBpAqOjqI0lrxSRcRDGormynaOt8-WQbsSDjipWYKGNxf8C3s/s1600/flowers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl-LLkSJzLC9DGDA7R0VtmN-STKfBfnsr3kORtazWSpz0zbPAQHmrIVIUDJZfd672qB7umQdPlVZRKKeQQ-it-cblvvSCBpAqOjqI0lrxSRcRDGormynaOt8-WQbsSDjipWYKGNxf8C3s/s320/flowers.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
And then Michael, who can't cook, cooked us 'breakfast' -- how cute is this? <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO77sajNN6pjjanwWNbA1EKSlUAErfyTmAcf1bW1eW5DxLo8G_1UHvDhm2p9TpzQqauRmyQ_m7iSQBZFpAVWE30p6qWxFTlvybIhS1CK7mrZ2TrLdRryWn7iznMXp5CpDZ7l9JIre5Rr4/s1600/breakfast.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO77sajNN6pjjanwWNbA1EKSlUAErfyTmAcf1bW1eW5DxLo8G_1UHvDhm2p9TpzQqauRmyQ_m7iSQBZFpAVWE30p6qWxFTlvybIhS1CK7mrZ2TrLdRryWn7iznMXp5CpDZ7l9JIre5Rr4/s320/breakfast.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I stayed in my jammies, knitting and drinking coffee, until almost 2 pm. Then I had to go into Ganges because today was the opening day for 'WinterCraft', the Salt Spring Arts Council's Christmas season Show and Sale ... and yours truly is one of the artisans in it, and I hadn't finished setting up my display and pricing yet! Didn't quite get done before the doors opened, but it worked out okay...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt9SYD32Ndcg0CM5wutBPYrtLSL3fmS706xXlRybj1jvwCzJgpzejBVjZXu59E54npUmUXdi-cQ-rm1X_StajqH1xrXp_e60Ain-L7YMxPDjH2b0OdaCDE25qAxoguvi_piuM4IL2jdlE/s1600/display.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="299" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt9SYD32Ndcg0CM5wutBPYrtLSL3fmS706xXlRybj1jvwCzJgpzejBVjZXu59E54npUmUXdi-cQ-rm1X_StajqH1xrXp_e60Ain-L7YMxPDjH2b0OdaCDE25qAxoguvi_piuM4IL2jdlE/s320/display.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Wanna buy a lace shawl? Or a cowl? Or some Christmas doilies and 'mug rugs?' I got 'em.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWZKQfV8gprsOkChiWAl53bIyXRYAG3uVXvS9SlklkXBafq4rztuTTK_CdaBfqbktmOl2MPPK9G08SXF5AL4xQK8AuwbNokqF0OE54A1BhzgDEa64pUD5fuf-c-iEtNvVmz0b1D8Y9Ji4/s1600/mugrugs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWZKQfV8gprsOkChiWAl53bIyXRYAG3uVXvS9SlklkXBafq4rztuTTK_CdaBfqbktmOl2MPPK9G08SXF5AL4xQK8AuwbNokqF0OE54A1BhzgDEa64pUD5fuf-c-iEtNvVmz0b1D8Y9Ji4/s320/mugrugs.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Here's an overview of the whole show, which looked amazing ... my stuff is in that first aisle just to the left of the woman in the burgundy coat. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghgbnVVpfpmZUgQ5DNo7Lw0zpynRXxKXQC3R1tImpne6NNLTfAW22FVb52gsA92XnjKPLQSCsfMUd6oGgXqPlUZtW79FnTyOYodOwn2balYljUkkIheqqJAM0nN4B9u7D2TcDJp0fJodI/s1600/WinterCraft.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghgbnVVpfpmZUgQ5DNo7Lw0zpynRXxKXQC3R1tImpne6NNLTfAW22FVb52gsA92XnjKPLQSCsfMUd6oGgXqPlUZtW79FnTyOYodOwn2balYljUkkIheqqJAM0nN4B9u7D2TcDJp0fJodI/s320/WinterCraft.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is Richard Steel, the manager/creative genius behind this whole shindig:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji6FsAnYGXa-bwRa8282SJCi8N56iRDHEDyLFrRghrxOKAg0_RdEo_haiY0qdn3CIptSr4wXGdn4qT3RdzN0ZCh_bdHYU4nS4dp023sRaOv2fPp4AwmHDfuOxJs7Aj_l38a6Nm9A6b8B8/s1600/richard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji6FsAnYGXa-bwRa8282SJCi8N56iRDHEDyLFrRghrxOKAg0_RdEo_haiY0qdn3CIptSr4wXGdn4qT3RdzN0ZCh_bdHYU4nS4dp023sRaOv2fPp4AwmHDfuOxJs7Aj_l38a6Nm9A6b8B8/s320/richard.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The show goes from now until Dec. 23rd, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, so if you're in the neighborhood, come check it out. :-)<br />
<br />
Anyway, when I got finished at the hall, I got home in time to pick Michael up and we went to the Rock Salt for dinner. It's been a lovely day!<br />
<br />
Tomorrow... my last intermediate knitting class. It'll be fun!<br />
<br />"Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-88027116848016696972013-11-28T22:14:00.001-08:002013-11-28T22:14:19.337-08:00A COLORFUL DAYI mentioned yesterday that I had to get my entry in today for the Eye For Color show the Guild will hold in the spring of 2014. Thursday is the regular Guild meeting, but I couldn't get there until it was almost over because of several other stops I had to make first. When I got there, a color workshop, facilitated by member Rosemary, was just ending.<br />
<br />
This is Rosemary.... (wearing a sweater that she knit from yarn she spun and dyed, from a fleece she processed, in a pattern she designed herself, by the way)...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3EDh8qUjLgKpJtM5OScS_bj0yPv7LjlCKcYWAIWq4wkzLB4jj_xPLxSfQ2zpELYXO0TwQfs92AgfRI8PJIKpOioDcreR3y8X7gYan-6m2r8xM6tplXZGgC87RNsjRvoUmRimxPLL_bt4/s1600/rosemary.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="252" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3EDh8qUjLgKpJtM5OScS_bj0yPv7LjlCKcYWAIWq4wkzLB4jj_xPLxSfQ2zpELYXO0TwQfs92AgfRI8PJIKpOioDcreR3y8X7gYan-6m2r8xM6tplXZGgC87RNsjRvoUmRimxPLL_bt4/s320/rosemary.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
... and this is all that color they were working with, close up... :-)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I was sorry I missed it! But I did get my Eye for Color registration in on time, though. :-)<br />
<br />
And then, after a Welcome Wagon visit way up a mountain here on the south end, I stopped for a few minutes at one of my favorite viewpoints. Only I couldn't see much because the fog was rolling in. But I got some great pictures ... great color, great light.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDnGk6273z2SrNFaxL9wPxVzcHYNs96qXFyXM_U1cCOmP2e5RYKtXXSPTubJ3MIHdgdd8uyf2pyp5jCUtsPoOjsYNNoWGVxybmOOOtMA0CH9KT0T8MrETQSpaPS1UPjTOWWDeW40OA_Xw/s1600/Fulford-am.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDnGk6273z2SrNFaxL9wPxVzcHYNs96qXFyXM_U1cCOmP2e5RYKtXXSPTubJ3MIHdgdd8uyf2pyp5jCUtsPoOjsYNNoWGVxybmOOOtMA0CH9KT0T8MrETQSpaPS1UPjTOWWDeW40OA_Xw/s320/Fulford-am.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
And speaking of ferries, the Skeena Queen appeared as I was watching.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNs6x1s4MJFjsoRL_r40JUWdnETIVJ3aq9AMESjprZKEunj69OA6WdiRXUv55MyZGPiYRV2Tw7B2GDpCD65zRXBfhjW9XaH1CkT18WDSJ1Cfxvw2pjSz9bmTDjIhwbs9mSRWFiOU8eE7A/s1600/SkeenaQueen1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNs6x1s4MJFjsoRL_r40JUWdnETIVJ3aq9AMESjprZKEunj69OA6WdiRXUv55MyZGPiYRV2Tw7B2GDpCD65zRXBfhjW9XaH1CkT18WDSJ1Cfxvw2pjSz9bmTDjIhwbs9mSRWFiOU8eE7A/s320/SkeenaQueen1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
And then I heard a noise below me on the dock...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZnOAOfeZKyeIGu_7TvhkZxJkQL-Fx-o1U5-oSPBbDqcT4yDbZ0Ahx3xqsMTBOqrLnD7Tbm0ICVQlqo3mdOcscVh-Sxl48Dtt7Klv7wqdzsniQd8-jcLOS2W4spmT9uxkGzHnTFWoL_VU/s1600/pigeons.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZnOAOfeZKyeIGu_7TvhkZxJkQL-Fx-o1U5-oSPBbDqcT4yDbZ0Ahx3xqsMTBOqrLnD7Tbm0ICVQlqo3mdOcscVh-Sxl48Dtt7Klv7wqdzsniQd8-jcLOS2W4spmT9uxkGzHnTFWoL_VU/s320/pigeons.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Check out that rebel in the middle!<br />
<br />
Made it into Victoria and, of course, after all my errands were done, and before time to go to the lunch I made time to do some knitting at Clover Point. When I left I took the long way around the harbour and I was sure glad I did... this massive BARGE was sitting at the cruise ship dock at Ogden Point. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it!<br />

Today was set-up day at the hall, and I wasn't actually ready .... so I was relieved when I arrived to find that they weren't sure where they were putting everyone yet, so they weren't ready either! That meant I got a reprieve ... until Thursday morning.<br />
<br />
I just have a few little things left to do ... a couple of I-cord ties for some lacy little knitted gift bags, finishing up the descriptions/care instructions on all the tags, making sure everything is properly priced, etc. I will have several coaster ('mug rug') sets in Christmas laciness there, as well as some of my shawls, and several cowls. I lowered most of my prices since the summer show, and I'm excited to be part of this one! Here's one of the pieces I'll have at WinterCraft...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXf-a1mmrxwJijCvjfBtK3S35qCfw3ZIdLIv1L9d8WkGzy7QgBo8JGl9PzuU2dyLkyIHVOtfyU3Rp8gUlRokyQ0up9S3cwiKh84ZM_VBUxuxdamnrtLZU4iILo5z3ucCMn22VTb7TMpCo/s1600/cottoncirc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXf-a1mmrxwJijCvjfBtK3S35qCfw3ZIdLIv1L9d8WkGzy7QgBo8JGl9PzuU2dyLkyIHVOtfyU3Rp8gUlRokyQ0up9S3cwiKh84ZM_VBUxuxdamnrtLZU4iILo5z3ucCMn22VTb7TMpCo/s320/cottoncirc.jpg" width="243" /></a></div>
It's a circular tablecloth (or christening shawl?) in crochet cotton, knit on size 2.75 mm needles. It took a little while to knit. ;)<br />
<br />
Tomorrow is the Welcome Wagon Christmas staff lunch in Victoria, so I won't have time to do any of that until tomorrow evening. I'll take along a couple of toques I've started for the ferry rides ... one has to get mailed away to our old buddy Mike, who has moved to Winnipeg, soon, if it's going to make it there before Christmas. The other is for the local Santas Anonymous Christmas dinner ... I'm hoping to create several little gifts for that event, and get some other local knitters to help, too.<br />
<br />
And then Thursday is the deadline to get my application in to the Salt Spring <a href="http://www.saltspringweaversandspinners.com/" target="_blank">Weavers and Spinners Guild</a> (of which I'm a member) for their spring show at ArtSpring Theatre called<a href="http://www.saltspringweaversandspinners.com/eye_for_colour.html" target="_blank"> 'Eye for Color.' </a>I'm *really* excited about this project .... each Guild member partners with any other artist in the community (many choose painters, but the other artist can be a photographer, a painter, a graphic artist, or whatever), picks a theme, and then collaborates within their respective skills to produce two coordinating pieces. As you can see if you clicked on that link, the results are amazing!<br />
<br />
I'll be partnering with a very talented local young photographer by the name of <a href="http://billiewoods.com/" target="_blank">Billie Woods </a>(who is also a knitter, that's how we met) - and if you click on that link, that's her voice singing as well. She's in Europe doing some singing gigs and taking pictures as we speak... so I wouldn't be surprised if our theme will be 'architecture' or something like that. :-)<br />
<br />
Then on Friday, apparently our children have invited us to Victoria again for dinner (because apparently it's my birthday) - fun! :)"Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-61777577686248981722013-11-25T20:14:00.003-08:002013-11-25T20:14:47.378-08:00AMPS AND VOLTS AND WATTS OH MYPeople sometimes ask me why I don't post more about being a liveaboard .... about life on a boat. Well, the answer generally is that, most days, my life doesn't look much different than yours -- even though I live it afloat.<br />
<br />
But some things really are different when you live aboard, and I became painfully aware of one of those differences over the last few days while it's been cold outside.<br />
<br />
You see, we don't have the same electrical power that you have in a house. From my limited understanding of the difference, I'll try to explain.... <br />
<br />
There are 15 amps in a standard '110 volt' outlet -- the kind that you all have a few dozen of in your homes. And you could plug something in to every single outlet in your house and be using all that electricity ... and probably never blow a breaker.<br />
<br />
Here on our boat .... and in many marinas ... we have a <i><b>total of 30 amps of power available to us</b></i> at any time. Period.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJXy-VkYVc-DsBR9hElI8kOtveWqOMqpzBxglgfGAsbO4Oxj9KfSVeD_GfmpsD3Ph85mvU-FTIqbZ63Pd0kSAwwxlb4eu7kPu6U9UCTjgmyU11jEf7p6MhQdsTxRiBIKdanXFsvvs9J5M/s1600/amperage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJXy-VkYVc-DsBR9hElI8kOtveWqOMqpzBxglgfGAsbO4Oxj9KfSVeD_GfmpsD3Ph85mvU-FTIqbZ63Pd0kSAwwxlb4eu7kPu6U9UCTjgmyU11jEf7p6MhQdsTxRiBIKdanXFsvvs9J5M/s1600/amperage.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Your average coffee pot, while perking, uses 6 - 9 amps. An electric heater of any sort generally uses about 13. A hot water tank uses about 15 amps. A TV and satellite system and computer and printer and cordless phone and fridge and a lamp to see them all with will use a total of about 15 amps.<br />
<br />
Can you see how this could be a problem?<br />
<br />
Right. In the summer, 30 amps is plenty of power for us ... we don't have heat on (and neither does any other boat in the marina), and our hot water tank is a 'mini' version so it only uses about 7 amps or so. So we can run our 'house' and never blow a breaker.<br />
<br />
This time of year, however, we need heat ... and the other boats here, even though no one else lives aboard, still often have a little heater on board to stave off mildew. And we don't *each* have 30 amps; I'm not exactly sure how many amps we all have, but I do know that sometimes if I turn on the coffee pot at the moment that someone else's heater kicks in, the breaker to the whole dock blows.<br />
<br />
And Michael then gets up from his recliner, puts his boots on, goes up the dock to the driveway, and flips the breaker.<br />
<br />
But never mind the other boats. Just on this one, we sometimes have to 'juggle' our power requirements if we don't want to blow the breaker. Especially when it's cold enough that we'd like to have a heater on ... in the aft cabin (that would be our bedroom), for example, while we have the woodstove warming up the salon (that's the living-room, in boat talk).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjotKRA1BtveMnVjbsVn39lfk5N0-XG8Khg2mYXibjLbbPsyPEZjWXTPoP0rEoU1XxkLikdhx0B7SfO78CEax9wAFWYJbXhBhkpM2tI235R6QVlH35uNgNEpZp2Llk5kDY7Hnm2AHjAIo0/s1600/ampmon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjotKRA1BtveMnVjbsVn39lfk5N0-XG8Khg2mYXibjLbbPsyPEZjWXTPoP0rEoU1XxkLikdhx0B7SfO78CEax9wAFWYJbXhBhkpM2tI235R6QVlH35uNgNEpZp2Llk5kDY7Hnm2AHjAIo0/s320/ampmon.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So we do this dance, almost daily, in the winter months. Want to make coffee? Turn off the hot water heater for that 10 minutes (and don't forget to turn it back on so you have hot water for your shower in half an hour). Need to use the hair blower? Better turn off the heater for a few minutes so I can dry my hair.<br />
<br />
Get the picture? Mostly, it's an accepted disadvantage of daily live-aboard life. But sometimes it's just really annoying! <br />
<br />
I did knit a hat today...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHSzcUNXH5wz1LDxBV2cs9tKqXovqAUx1eO3-EBSbRHMSt6pZ1kwlz8_BCiQSAePyEx-8kxDGpKnvqXrH30XGbk0-K00mzlSoFxZ-L-7opneZRVLsq-sbBZRyBnkHtul_vfBSxYSyhy2E/s1600/fakearan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHSzcUNXH5wz1LDxBV2cs9tKqXovqAUx1eO3-EBSbRHMSt6pZ1kwlz8_BCiQSAePyEx-8kxDGpKnvqXrH30XGbk0-K00mzlSoFxZ-L-7opneZRVLsq-sbBZRyBnkHtul_vfBSxYSyhy2E/s320/fakearan.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
... so I'm happy about that! <br /><br />"Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-91634510803529518782013-11-24T19:10:00.001-08:002013-11-24T19:10:25.876-08:00I've had a *delicious* day -- and it had nothing to do with food(well, almost nothing)!<br />
<br />
First of all, I didn't have anything I 'had' to do. So I could stay in my jammies all day ... and I did just that.<br />
<br />
There was a heavy frost outside at daylight, and it stayed cold all day. So I started a little fire in the woodstove and kept it toasty warm in here the whole day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiInNIUu7IpxgiFMe_ph6_x_rl1CCoG_EMD14lFTVq5dE5Bf8uZrt1jYeTJrDuesG8ZUJesQEyr5i3Z35kby4ZyVZAMEjvmuD6oypTG8r5V5RL6mtg1R4nvncivOBAliwxQ_iUr-ahp4hY/s1600/woodstove2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiInNIUu7IpxgiFMe_ph6_x_rl1CCoG_EMD14lFTVq5dE5Bf8uZrt1jYeTJrDuesG8ZUJesQEyr5i3Z35kby4ZyVZAMEjvmuD6oypTG8r5V5RL6mtg1R4nvncivOBAliwxQ_iUr-ahp4hY/s1600/woodstove2.jpg" /></a></div>
(No I don't have a Christmas tree up yet ... that's an old photo). <br /><br />
Michael went in to Ganges to run some errands, so I had my home to myself for several hours. <br />
<br />
I got some carrots, onions and potatoes prepared, and put a pot roast in the oven .... more warmth without turning on the electric heat. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNHoL1AI1nDM1R3vHD3uREJoDFN7mTdsBUpU4IpzN9SvO8xt21KUBt19Go1_q7C7TWGGoSYUzwg4EmCCBeaWpJF8K9yebWNjo4AahyphenhyphentvlGRpLe4qfGgNxwAaaTTyUINl0mIUHtvBocTpc/s1600/pot+boast.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNHoL1AI1nDM1R3vHD3uREJoDFN7mTdsBUpU4IpzN9SvO8xt21KUBt19Go1_q7C7TWGGoSYUzwg4EmCCBeaWpJF8K9yebWNjo4AahyphenhyphentvlGRpLe4qfGgNxwAaaTTyUINl0mIUHtvBocTpc/s320/pot+boast.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />I did some dishes, tidied up a bit, made a few phone calls. Played mindless games on the computer ... for almost an hour.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmDvKaD2NSpL4wfj7dxyDh-t9iBK2Xx2nMqHf48NhTlSJLQu82JZk41o8bVSrk0l48WJJoo4K-QEY7s4jDee5iAAAW05LUzZ-K44FdkE97Qg5OjBVO4ST93gtWIiSgpX_jsI5SwTAz8is/s1600/tetris.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmDvKaD2NSpL4wfj7dxyDh-t9iBK2Xx2nMqHf48NhTlSJLQu82JZk41o8bVSrk0l48WJJoo4K-QEY7s4jDee5iAAAW05LUzZ-K44FdkE97Qg5OjBVO4ST93gtWIiSgpX_jsI5SwTAz8is/s320/tetris.JPG" width="234" /></a></div>
<br />
Between ferries, Fulford is sooooooooooo quiet; I love it, and today I literally 'absorbed' the quiet all day. Sometimes I find a radio station on my computer to listen to while I work -- but not today. Just silence. <br />
<br />
Then I soaked and blocked some knitting -- a few lace doilies that will be for sale at ArtCraft by the end of the week, and the christening shawl I knit several weeks ago (pictures tomorrow). I stopped to look outside at the world around me several times ... beautiful blue sky, flat calm, lots of wintering birds around chasing minnow. Lovely! <br />
<br />
And I knit. Cast on a toque this morning in a tweedy gray alpaca ... and I've almost finished it now. <br />
<br />
Michael came home ... and went almost immediately for his daily nap. More quiet.... :)<br />
<br />
It's now 7 pm., and dinner is ready. It's been a 'delicious' day! :) <br />
<br />
<br />"Skipper"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12591196032969738667noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5735703203322834001.post-8323799980834186702013-11-23T17:31:00.003-08:002013-11-23T17:31:39.962-08:00A GREAT DAY!This morning as I was getting out of the boat to go teach my knitting class, I heard an unmistable sound in the air above me...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWPpho1DEYQqi7kUa93KnDf2oNbBvynOxNaUa51_2ErNtpRob94EEmy4ElNeBFO_jHy_-mjlbxcGi9koee1OSeRUXHfcUV0jgHFInyiN6s21xQPn_sajtP8VbVgSc2CQ4UnAbyzPwO-Qc/s1600/eagle-tree.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWPpho1DEYQqi7kUa93KnDf2oNbBvynOxNaUa51_2ErNtpRob94EEmy4ElNeBFO_jHy_-mjlbxcGi9koee1OSeRUXHfcUV0jgHFInyiN6s21xQPn_sajtP8VbVgSc2CQ4UnAbyzPwO-Qc/s320/eagle-tree.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This eagle was talking to one on a branch a little further along the shoreline - and I had time to get my camera out of my bag while balancing on our rocking 'porch', at the time, and get the photo, before they both flew away. <br />
<br />
Then I got to the yarn store to teach the class, and when I walked into the classroom this is what I saw...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIgzAgk0KmqdAW5_tv32Z8fhTJe7saku6jtqZ_OQnskqjY6WTeL_4m7DjRwyUJOJXXFyvjcHoVpYz9UmUczsRRSxyqAEIsJyUN8oCxWw2y8tTKDNLJ-NZrt6SQ_09YQmJcCsNSktnPXJo/s1600/cedar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIgzAgk0KmqdAW5_tv32Z8fhTJe7saku6jtqZ_OQnskqjY6WTeL_4m7DjRwyUJOJXXFyvjcHoVpYz9UmUczsRRSxyqAEIsJyUN8oCxWw2y8tTKDNLJ-NZrt6SQ_09YQmJcCsNSktnPXJo/s320/cedar.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The piece was called 'Ode to Cedar,' and guess what? It's made from THREAD. Not even YARN, just thread. Unbelievable! (Remember that you can click on the pic to make it bigger to see more detail). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we got back to the marina just about dusk... and this was the scene in the sky above me. . . </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq5RCcyGzcIeZqPX3E_tVEmEfUKcIVMzXyRBamBUtne7gpg4_2tQ80Lk40Misr0EAEji0EjN0U7wW792CWhT7mDm0Ym3uhAzsc3afLdGLlx1BUa3Ob5LHGrV3BkZIzkcIMYDGBzrm5U3o/s1600/sunset1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq5RCcyGzcIeZqPX3E_tVEmEfUKcIVMzXyRBamBUtne7gpg4_2tQ80Lk40Misr0EAEji0EjN0U7wW792CWhT7mDm0Ym3uhAzsc3afLdGLlx1BUa3Ob5LHGrV3BkZIzkcIMYDGBzrm5U3o/s320/sunset1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP2L3pHxFNfJYz0QobjYzWODgouNVTMvjB4vm6lzIjgFHFL-qPeeBXs06PcEFPow1kHn5DiayQ0EsoQEUa8dlAP1HSNnexlDhROwNgH20R99NlAkt4YjU0ySOao1Y3zgbEU0foIS8i3ic/s1600/sunset2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP2L3pHxFNfJYz0QobjYzWODgouNVTMvjB4vm6lzIjgFHFL-qPeeBXs06PcEFPow1kHn5DiayQ0EsoQEUa8dlAP1HSNnexlDhROwNgH20R99NlAkt4YjU0ySOao1Y3zgbEU0foIS8i3ic/s320/sunset2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
It doesn't get much better than this. I love my life!<br />

And Michael always sleeps until at least 8 a.m.<br />
<br />
Of course, these days it's not light out until at least 7 a.m. - which is when I put the knitting down for a break, open the curtains and have a look out at the day. The thermometre has dipped below zero (but only just) the last few nights, so it's been cold out there. This is what it looked like in Fulford Harbour when I opened the curtains this morning...<br />

Doesn't that look cold to you?<br />
<br />
And then I looked out another window...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipJvmO5Fo98CuS6J3LQwSG10FN0M6-9uKZ05RYii4McCLRMYMRDc52P5RD4FrCuNQ13aGB4YxqmmnmgLlEykuQF35fz4OZxdhTFRqe4EQqwjUXk2w4Lmsy9wEFRudQX-3usxYp5JBB8Kc/s1600/mistybay.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="188" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipJvmO5Fo98CuS6J3LQwSG10FN0M6-9uKZ05RYii4McCLRMYMRDc52P5RD4FrCuNQ13aGB4YxqmmnmgLlEykuQF35fz4OZxdhTFRqe4EQqwjUXk2w4Lmsy9wEFRudQX-3usxYp5JBB8Kc/s320/mistybay.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
... and there was a mist about a foot high on the water. Out another window...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGcZUN2Fb2FAbC0Q2Ie_qJCBl6VlOCSLafvUwps09hPez9l5AB9GNQToMFzjj_W7WRviqBZrijPMUtOhaJL_4wfDpBd0j0qRaqHtEoqDP-LOXikDmr8S5qptRmF-fxbd8RECOuyL3xglU/s1600/boathouses.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGcZUN2Fb2FAbC0Q2Ie_qJCBl6VlOCSLafvUwps09hPez9l5AB9GNQToMFzjj_W7WRviqBZrijPMUtOhaJL_4wfDpBd0j0qRaqHtEoqDP-LOXikDmr8S5qptRmF-fxbd8RECOuyL3xglU/s320/boathouses.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
... these are some old abandoned boathouses in the corner of the bay ... and the same mist. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I noticed it was moving. Within 10 minutes it had all dissipated completely, and we had amazing blue sky all day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was still cold, though! </div>

This is a test knit cowl and I used some old hand-spun for it; it's lovely, and it'll be a Christmas present for someone!<br />

This is another test knit, a 'shawlette' and I haven't even blocked it yet, but it's black, and it has beads, and I may have to keep it for myself. ;-)<br />
<br />
And yes, I have spindle spun.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhZswJurpCQ6ksMZvQbwuUo2hfW0G0GaQet3OT2rH2Gg1wVuYgfRBviw4GiDkJ4ZoFEqjL9ctoG1t_VR_LBao6jsXr7DmISaNBrieMmmWJAdncHc0TBs72Czocuj-1Av7Cu4F-BKN2RpE/s1600/spindles-spun.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhZswJurpCQ6ksMZvQbwuUo2hfW0G0GaQet3OT2rH2Gg1wVuYgfRBviw4GiDkJ4ZoFEqjL9ctoG1t_VR_LBao6jsXr7DmISaNBrieMmmWJAdncHc0TBs72Czocuj-1Av7Cu4F-BKN2RpE/s320/spindles-spun.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Both of my spindles came home with some actual spun fibre on them the other night. Not *well* spun, but spun. It's fun.... just not sure if I'll pursue this, because it may take me til I'm 79 to be able to spin laceweight yarn, which is pretty much all I use anymore!<br />
<br />
Still working on the baby blanket.... more tomorrow. <br />
